2W42 ‘Reckless and Revolutionary’ Simon Hyland (St Augustine's College, Brookvale) “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God”. (Colossians 3:16) Music can nourish the soul. It can arouse emotions, it can motivate and it can pacify. Learn how music can also help to break down barriers of apathy in the classroom and engage students in learning about Scripture. Room: Auditorium (Capacity 400)
2W43'Dive to the Deep ... Don’t Settle on the Surface!' Pip Smith (REC, Holy Cross Primary, Kincumber) and Stefanie Thom (Our Lady of Good Counsel Primary, Forestville) Are you getting to the core of Scripture or just scratching the surface? What do your students truly wonder about Scripture? Explore the heart of Scripture by making their thinking visible. This workshop explores introducing core Scriptures using visible thinking strategies. A brief connection is made with the idea of planning units based on the 'four chambers of the heart' - Scripture, Tradition, Liturgy and Prayer before you will be led through a series of examples from real life classrooms. You will view student work samples demonstrating the rich thinking and wonderings that can develop from using visible thinking strategies; and take home practical ideas to use in your classroom. Room: Upper Level 1 & 2 (Capacity 44)
2W44 The Biblical study toolbox Fiona Brown (CSO) and Greg Wilson (CSO) Join in a very hands-on guided exegesis of the Parable of the Lost Son using a range of traditional and contemporary Bible study tools that can be used in the classroom. Bring your laptop or device. Room: Upper Level 3 (Capacity 24)
2W45 'Holy Spirit Dreaming - Bringing the Scriptures to life through indigenous art' Kerry Power (REC MacKillop College, Warnervale) In this workshop you will see how Aboriginal art can be used to bring Scripture to life. You will have an opportunity to engage with indigenous art and connect with key Scriptures from the Old and New Testament. You will observe this in action in the classroom. This experience will offer inspiration to try the same in your own context. Room: Upper Level Room 4 (Capacity 24)
2W46 Godly Play in the RE classroom Maureen Hemmings (Australian Catholic University) This workshop will explore some practical ways in which Godly Play can influence the use of Scripture and storytelling in the classroom in both Catholic primary and secondary schools. Participants will engage in a practical storytelling demonstration, and they will also consider those elements necessary to ensure that Scripture storytelling is both faithful to the essence of Godly Play and to the RE curriculum documents directed for use in the Diocese. Such a careful balance in the classroom context creates an opportunity for the Word of God to touch and engage the hearts and minds of students. Room: Urban Garden (Capacity 50)
2W47 'Heading down the mountain: Resources to take us beyond the Summit' Teresa Pirola (CSO) and Mary Connor (CSO) “Where to from here?” is an excellent question to ask after any conference. In working towards our “Sweeter than Honey” Summit, Broken Bay Catholic Schools Office has also developed a resource booklet and website (“HONEY: Tasting and Teaching Scripture”) to assist teachers on the journey back home. In this workshop Mary Connor and Teresa Pirola will introduce participants to these resources and walk them through the contents and strategies offered. Room: Lower Level (Capacity 60)
